Federal tax filing extension for 2020 returns

Normally, you must file your tax return by April 15 (aka “Tax Day”). But in 2020, the IRS pushed back the federal tax deadline to July 15 due to the coronavirus. And in 2021, the IRS is once again pushing back the federal tax return deadline.

Thanks to the IRS extension, you have until May 17 to file your 2020 tax return—without incurring penalties and interest. The IRS payment extension applies to individual taxpayers and those who payself-employment taxes. However, this extensiondoes notapply to quarterlyestimated taxpayments due on April 15, 2021.

Due to severe winter storms, the IRS has extended the federal tax deadline to June 15, 2021 for individual and business tax payments in Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Generally, the state tax return deadline is April 15 each year. But with the coronavirus still impacting many individuals, states are beginning to push back state tax return deadlines.
